'Khalistan' groups deface Gandhi statue

The statue of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi in Washington DC was defaced by supporters of 'Khalistan'.

The attackers partially covered the statue outside the Indian embassy with a 'Khalistan' flag.

The protesters have expressed support for farmers who are staging large rallies in India against new agriculture laws introduced by the Indian government.

Posters and banners were propped up against the statue and a yellow flag was sighted draped over it. People were seen waving 'Khalistani' flags and raising pro-Khalistan slogans at the spot.

The Indian embassy in Washington condemned the attack on the statue.

Indian officials said a strong protest has been lodged with US law enforcement agencies and has also taken up the matter with the US Department of State for an early investigation and action against the culprits under the applicable law.
