The leader of Islamic State Abu Bakr al Baghdadi has been killed in a raid by US special forces in northwestern Syria.
Various media reports say up to 70 troops - including members of the elite Delta Force of the US military - carried out the spectacular operation. The raid was led by low flying choppers before special forces swept through Al Baghdadi's compound and trapping him at the end of tunnel.
Baghdadi, wearing an explosives vest, blew himself up along with his three children in the tunnel.
"Last night, the United States brought the world's number one terrorist leader to justice," Trump announced at the White House on Sunday. "Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead."
Trump said the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) died after running into a dead-end tunnel in the village of Barisha and ignited an explosive vest during the raid, killing himself along with three of his children.
