By Santosh | A patch of land where Google boss Sundar Pichai’s childhood home once stood in the Indian city of Chennai, has been sold, Business Today newspaper reports.
The 50-year-old executive is the CEO of Alphabet, the parent company of Google.
Pichai’s father Regunatha Pichai handed the property to Tamil filmmaker C Manikandan who bought the land located at Ashok Nagar - a middle-class neighbourhood.
A modest house which occupied the space was demolished before the sale.
It was Pichai’s first property and he broke down as he handed over the papers, Manikandan was quoted by the newspaper.
He described Pichai as a humble man and said he waited patiently for several hours at the land registration office as paperwork was being completed, the newspaper added.
Sundar Pichai, admired across India and particularly in his home state of Tamil Nadu, is said to have lived in the house till he was 20. Reports say he attended Jawahar Vidyalaya and Vana Vani schools in the neighbourhood before moving to study metallurgical designing at the Kharagpur branch of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology in 1989.
Pichai became the CEO of Google in 2015 and earned a reputation as a brilliant decision maker.
He was credited with the success of many of Google’s projects and products launched under his leadership as the company stayed ahead of the curve in the fiercely competitive tech space.
His total compensation for the year 2022 was $226 million, according to media reports.
