Dems pick Kamala Harris as presidential nominee

|| By Santosh

In a ballot of party delegates, US Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the Democratic presidential nomination.

Through phone conversation, Ms. Harris expressed her gratitude for being "the presumptive nominee" as the virtual roll call for the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago later this month progresses.

Ms. Harris is the first South Asian and Black woman to represent a major US political party in the White House.

She would become the first female president of the United States of America if she defeats Republican nominee Donald Trump in November.

Following his resignation last month, President Joe Biden swiftly endorsed her and she ran unchallenged in the virtual roll call. A few possible competitors adopted his strategy.

Ms. Harris officially became the nominee on Friday afternoon after receiving the necessary 2,350 delegates' votes to qualify for the nomination.

Democrats have reported that 3,923 delegates, or 99% of the total, intend to support her.

On Thursday, the roll call started, and it will end on Monday.
