Cyclone Dana hits India's east coast

Cyclone Dana has made landfall on India's east coast, causing severe gusts and heavy rainfall in parts of Odisah and West Bengal states.

With winds of about 110 kmph, the storm made landfall between Dhamra and Bhitarkanika in the Kendrapara district in Odisha state.

By noon Friday the storm was expected to gradually wane and transform into a cyclonic system.

The Special Relief Commissioner's office in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, received reports of trees being uprooted.

East Midnapore in neighboring West Bengal was also affected by the cyclone.

Services at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar and the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata were restored at 8 a.m Friday after being halted overnight as a precaution.

As they prepared for the powerful cyclonic storm, officials in both states evacuated thousands of people, closed schools, canceled over 400 trains, and halted airline operations.
