India reported 43,846 new Covid cases on Saturday - the highest in four months.
The new outbreaks were seen in the western states of Maharashtra, Punjab and Gujarat and the in the southern states of Kerala and Karnataka.
Reports said 197 deaths were recorded in what appears to be India's second wave of Covid-19.
In the past months India had gradually relaxed restrict measures as the country returned to
a near normal situation.
Indians on Wednesday March 24 will mark the first anniversary of the start of a strict lockdown that was suddenly enforced by the authorities that left millions of migrant labourers without food, job, money and transport to return home.
