Flight IX-1344, operated by Air India Express crashed in bad weather after overshooting the runway at Calicut airport in Kerala. Eighteen passengers and both pilots were killed in the incident on Friday evening.
The plane, a Boeing 737, was carrying 190 people as part of India's repatriation operation from Dubai.
Calicut airport has a 'table top' runway and Flight IX-1344 skidded on landing and fell into a ditch before breaking in two. Reports say most damage was to the front of the plane.
The incident occured on the second attempt to land as the pilots aborted
Experts say casualties would have been very high had the plane burst into flames on impact.
